What you need
- Loose yerba mate
- Gourd (cup)
- Bombilla (straw with filter)
- Water
How to do it
- Fill the gourd 3/4 full with yerba mate, about 50 g.
- Cover the opening with your palm, turn the gourd over and shake lightly.
- Tilt the gourd about 45 degrees so the yerba gathers in a small "mountain" on one side. Pour water at the foot of the mountain until just under halfway, and let it rest for a couple of minutes.
- Place the bombilla into the damp part and guide it gently towards the bottom, under the mountain.
- Pour hot water (80 °C) into the empty side, along the bombilla. Refill with hot water. Keep the top of the mountain dry to preserve the flavour as long as possible.

What you need
- French press
- Loose yerba mate
- Hot water
How to do it
- Boil enough water to fill the press.
- Use about 1 tbsp yerba mate per 200–300 ml water.
- Pour the water (about 80 °C) and let it steep for a few minutes.
- Press down slowly and pour into a cup – salud!
Tip: more yerba and/or a longer steep makes a stronger brew.

What you need
- Tea strainer or infuser
- Cup
- Loose yerba mate
- Hot water
How to do it
- Put 1–2 tsp yerba mate in the strainer – or straight into the cup for the most traditional way.
- Boil water and let it rest a moment (~75–80°, not boiling).
- Lower the strainer into the cup and pour the water. Steep 3–5 minutes depending on the strength you want.
- Lift out the strainer. If the yerba is loose in the cup, let it settle and drink carefully – top up with water as you go.
